Title: Where do you leave your bike while touring?
Post by: tony on July 09, 2010, 01:18:42 PM
This is a typical newbie's question! But I am wondering what the heck I will be doing with my bike (and all the stuff on it!) when I need to go around town or need to go shopping etc. And what about at night when you stay in a hostel or hotel? Do they usually have a place to leave your bike? I am a bit nervous about that and yet nobody seems to have any issues with it.

First option is to always put the bike in the room, even if you have to drag the thing up numerous flights of stairs. Even in the hallway outside the room is good.
2nd option is only if you get a good "feel" to leave it in their nominated alternate place. This could be a spare room that gets locked. Ground floor rooms are the best option.

As for shopping we travel as a pair, but often we go into the shop together as long as we can see the bikes.  That goes for eateries too. Thats in SE asia and India, were people are just curious but love to touch. Get a stick and smack em.
In south america they insisted we take the bikes into the restaurant.

Erm, my bike is in the hotel foyer (I THINK). I've not left the room yet today, so it should still be there.

No worries about leaving it if I have all my gear with me. Otherwise I just lock it to something secured to the ground and take my all important handle bar bag with me all the time.

If you are worried about it when going into shops or something always make a small scene when locking it up so that people see it is you who the bike belongs to.  It seems to work for me. On more than one occasion I've come back to find someone guarding it for me while i've been away.

Otherwise the bike stays in sight. buy hey, even when I look at my bike I wonder how it has managed to get so far, and if it looks that bad then no ones going to steal it  :D :D :D
