Your Travel Journal / things i learned on my first bikecamp trip:
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:02:14 PM »
i'm new to bikecamping, but have been day cycling around town for a few years now. my first trip, just returned yesterday, was a 2-day, 1 night, 164 km. roundtrip. here's a few things i learned:
1- there is no shame in walking a hill. in fact, some hills look much better on foot.
2- i needed less clothing and more food. it's easy to wear the same clothes twice, but tough to afford nutrition at roadside gas bars.
3- racoons kinda sound like bears at 3 a.m.
4- resist every second urge to rest, but never deny the third. in the latter part of a travel day, a 5 minute rest can make a huge impact toward the overall results of each next hour.
5- mealtimes are for hometimes. get yourself some sugar all ride long.
6- learn to dismount over panniers smoothly off both sides. cars attack from the left. dogs attack from the right.
7- road quality must be acepted as-is but wind patterns and traffic densities can change dramatically with time of day. i look forward to scheduling night rides to a few of my upcoming trips.
8- the tool box over the front panniers was a mistake that caused a slight wobble during hand release of grips. i plan to split this weight to the bottom of each pannier and move some lighter clothing to the over bag.

overall, this trip went very well. i have planned many 160-240 km. overnights throughout june, will be expanding my range throughout july with hopes of reaching 500-600k distances per week (5 days ride, 2 days rest) by mid august.
