North America / Highway 1 between San Francisco and LA
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:58:09 AM »
I am considering biking from SF to LA this coming fall. Apparently it is a popular route and I am sure it must be very scenic. But how is it by bicycle? It seems like it may not be as much fun when done on a bicycle considering that it is only a two-lane road with probably a lot of tourist traffic more interested in looking at the vistas than paying attention to bicycles on a windy road. Did any of you bike that road? Am I right? If so, I may consider smaller inland roads. No beaches there but it looks like there are plenty of nice national parks. Any thoughts?

Hi Big Lew, nice to have you here. I have a question, I am impressed with the "no breakdowns such as spokes, axles etc" so I was wondering what axle and what kind of spokes do you use? Good luck with your upcoming trip and If you end up using a trailer, I'd be interested to see what you think...and I'm probably not the only one  :D

The Bicycle / Has anyone heard of a broken frame?
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:41:08 AM »
I often hear the debate about aluminum vs steel frames and one of the arguments in favor of the steel frame is that it is easier to solder steel, so if you're in the middle of nowhere you can fix your bike. On the other hand, I never heard of anyone breaking their frame. Has anyone had or heard of experiences with broken frames?

Parts, Components & Accessories / Brooks saddle with spring or not?
« on: May 24, 2010, 07:02:50 AM »
I'd like to get a Brooks saddle as most people think they are the best for touring but the choices are a bit overwhelming. I saw they have some with a spring but I never saw one on a touring bike. Does anyone have any experience? Any recommendations?

Clothing for Bicycle Touring / Icebreaker for bicycle touring?

Does anyone use Icebreaker clothing (or other Merino wool) on their bike trips? I read it is quite good, but is it worth the money?

While on the Road / backpack for hiking on a bicycle tour?
« on: May 10, 2010, 09:24:12 PM »
I love to hike when I travel and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a decent backpack that I can take with me on a bicycle trip. I want something relatively comfortable and strong enough to carry gear for 2 days. I can't see myself taking my heavy 60L backpack so I am looking for a good substitute. If someone can suggest a brand, a model, or any advise, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

While on the Road / Is wild camping safe for single women?
« on: April 08, 2010, 12:00:37 PM »

I am currently planning my first bike-touring trip and will be traveling solo along the west coast.  I'm not familiar with this part of the country and this will be my first time camping alone.  Does anyone know if wild camping is feasible in most areas of the west coast?  Also, do you know if it is safe for single women to camp alone in the wild, as long I exercise reasonable caution? Thank you for your input.

Getting Ready / Average daily distance
« on: April 07, 2010, 06:14:31 PM »

I am new to the biking world and am planning my first bicycle-touring trip for this coming summer along the west coast of the US.  I plan on biking on paved roads and have about two months planned for my trip.  I am finding it difficult to plan for my trip because I don't know how many miles per day is a realistic goal or expectation for me.  I have very little biking experience, but am in moderate physical condition.  For planning purposes, could anyone tell me how many miles per day I can expect to ride if I want to ride for a good part of the day but want to have enough time and energy left to see the sights along the way?  Thank you for your input.
