Vaude vs. Ortlieb?
« on: January 11, 2010, 03:33:15 PM »
I was chatting with a guy the other day who almost persuaded me to get Vaude Aqua Backs instead of Ortlieb Roller classics.

He had ridden from Thailand to the UK using them and stated that the clips were far superior, the solid plastic back was stronger and gave move protection and the clips that hold the roll top down were far better positioned than the ortliebs.

He had used Ortliebs before the Vaudes so had first hand knowledge of both products.

Anyone else have a view on these two pannier brands and their pros and cons.

Cheers

I haven't used Vaude myself, but I met a couple of people using them. They certainly were happy with them. They do look better, and I think that person you met is right on those different points. I don't know if I would go so far as to state that they are "far superior"... The Ortlieb panniers, although perhaps not perfect, are excellent panniers, in my opinion. CycloCamping.com is planning on carrying some Vaude panniers, so once we receive them, I will do some comparisons and give some reviews here and on the "tips & tricks" section (http://www.cyclocamping.com/products.asp?cat=87). One thing to remember is that the Vaude Aqua Backs panniers are close to twice as expensive as the Ortlieb Roller Classics panniers. Maybe it's worth the money, I don't know... If anyone has tried both, I would be glad to hear their opinion, too...

Also, if anyone has any experience with the Pacific Outdoor equipment panniers, I would be happy to hear some reviews as well...

I have been more than 6 years on the road. 98% of the travelleres I had met use Ortlieb. Me too. First set of Ortlieb I have to buy through internet as we did not have dealer in Spain. Now we have, www.bike-tech.net but I do not need to buy. Ortlieb sponsor me. Have a look to 2010 catalogue. I am the clown

Hey Alvaro, I didn't expect to see you that quickly on this forum! I will ship your mattress today. I hope you have extra room for it... it's a little bulky!

For those who don't know Biciclown, make sure to check out some of his AWESOME videos!

A DVD in English should come soon, right Alvaro?

Here is a little taste of it: Stunning footage, incredible music...

Vaude or Ortlieb?  How about neither.  Nice bikes don't need gaudy plastic hanging on them. Berthoud for me!

Are the Vaude models that you are referring to the Aquaback models? Because they are supposed to be pretty waterproof...

Here in Estonia people use more Ortlieb than Voude.
I use both (we sell both and also rent both ones).
Vaude back shield is good and protects the back side of pannier. Some of Ortliebs get hurt by racks (we use different ones, non branded and racktime).
But Ortlieb panniers have straps to carry them, more convenient (rollers)...
Here in Estonia the cost the same price, ortlieb just is more known... ;D
