Arkel Panniers vs. Ortlieb Panniers?
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:30:37 AM »
Some swear by Ortlieb for the waterproofness, sturdiness and price; others swear by Arkel for the number of pockets, sturdiness, quality of the hooks etc.... What about you?

I can only really comment on Ortlieb since that is all I have ever used,  very happy with them.

I purchased Arkel panniers for the front last year and will be purchasing another set this year for the rear.  These replaced another brand.  From my research you can't go wrong with either one.  For the record, I really like my Arkel's.

I tried both. I borrow some Arkels once from a friend of mine for a 4-week trip in Canada and I own some Ortlieb back-roller, and some old bike-packer. Arkel are nicely made, but I don't like to have to cover the panniers every time it looks like it is going to rain and to put delicate stuff in plastic bags. For me, panniers should be waterproof. I don't care to have everything in the same pocket, so Ortlieb panniers are what works the best for me. And by the way, you can use side pockets on the bike-packers.

I agree, non-waterproof panniers are not the way to go!
