Recommended Route in North-East USA?
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:57:51 PM »
My buddy will have his first trip on bike in north east US pretty soon. It will be for a few weeks, it doesn't have to be a loop and he would like to avoid area too populated. Does anyone can suggest a scenic route in the state of NY and/or Pensylvania?

Maybe not useful:
I recently cycled the C&O canal, but this is a bit more south than you want.
It is an easy ride, on a very nice dirt bike path.
Your friend can take a bus to Washington DC and start cycling from there.
I haven't been more north than New York.

I'd suggest riding across PA along state route 6.  It traverses E-W across the northern tier counties, arguably the most scenic area in that state.  Not too populated either, and traffic can be a little easier to deal with.  Be ready to climb and descend though.

In NY there is a route that traverses their southern tier following NY17.  It is also an E-W ramble, but is more flat, and crosses a Native American reservation.

One could also tour the Allegheny National Forest, and mix pavement and surface roads in the "big woods".  Similar riding to this can be had in the Adirondacks.

@Tony The Great Lakes Seaway Trail byway parallels the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes in New York and Pennsylvania.

So I'm new here but at my local bike shop there is a sign That there is plans to connect the heritage trail in wheeling wv to another trail that leads to Washington dc.  I guess there trying to get funding to finish 17 miles of the 430 mile trail.    Sounds like you could make another rout around the 17 miles that isn't finished.   When I have more info I'll post something.
