Is Middle-East a safe place to travel?
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:23:57 AM »
This question might sound dumb. But I always hear two stories. On one side you always hear around you about Muslims and how dangerous traveling in Middle-East is (and I have to say that usually those people either never traveled themselves or it is through the media. And on the other hand, I read a lot of times about people who biked through Middle-East and they absolutely LOVED it, and especially for the people. I was wondering if people here agree with that? I hate the propaganda that TV throws at people but I got to admit that they make me think twice about going to this part of the world, and yet I would really love to. I know Middle-Eats is a vast region, but seriously I heard only good stuff.. Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iran, even Saudi Arabia they all have some good feedbacks from cyclotourist - even from women! If anyone traveled there by bike I'd like to hear what they have to say...

Diego,

Yes, you are right, the media deforms the reality of countries in the Middle-East.  It seems that the media focuses mostly on how Muslims are different from us in the West.  But Muslims are people like you and me - they want peace, they want to have a family, a decent job, a good relationship with their neighbors.... just like most people on this planet. Unfortunately, there are a handful of bad guys and that's what the media likes to talk about. I spent quite some time in this part of the world and had a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend going there. The people are incredibly welcoming and this makes the experience very unique...

Probably Sirya and Iran are one of the most hospitality places in the world for cyclist. And of course north of Sudan, where the Nubian people are living. You can have a look to this small story that I wrote about Iran.

Iran is still my favorite country of all 40 i have cycled through.
It is shocking to find out the lies that our free media tell about those countries.
Go there, you well have the best time of your life!

I'm currently in Dogubayazit - Tomorrow I cycle down to and into Iran.

I have to admit that throughtout the whole of this journey so far, 100 days to cross Europe from France to Dogubayazit, entering Iran is the most exciting part I have been looking forward to.

It's not the place that the media make of it, it is the place you make of it.

Having been on the road long enough you will have the wiseness to spot potentially difficult situations. The guile to find decent camping places, and the ability to make of the country what you will.

Yes, I have to admit that I am looking forward to visiting Iran more than any other place so far.
You may say that I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us, And we can cycle the world as one.

Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can.
No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man.
Imagine all the people, Sharing all the world...

Good for you! I envy you! I had such great time in Iran. Make sure you try the excellent abgusht! In Tabriz, you can find some local places by the market (avoid tourist traps)! It's sooooo god!
